Percy Lee Brown, Jr.
The Percy Lee Brown, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund is named in honor of the late Percy Lee Brown, Jr. of Steubenville, Ohio. Percy was a tremendous athlete who excelled in football, basketball, baseball and boxing. His prowess and tenacity as a boxer earned him his nickname, “Bomber.” However, his favorite sport was football. He graduated from Steubenville High School and went on to play football at The Ohio State University. While there he became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He also attended the College of Steubenville. Ultimately, he tried out with the Cleveland Browns and played for them briefly.
Percy strongly believed that he could make a difference in his community where he was extremely active. Percy was a member of the Second Baptist Church, the NAACP, the Labelleview Neighborhood Watch Committee, the Prince Albert Lodge #232 and the Democratic County Central Committee. He ran twice for Councilman in the 1st ward. He served too as a Special Police Officer and as volunteer football and basketball coaches. Percy retired from Wheeling Pittsburgh Steel Corporation as a Laboratory Chemist.
Percy worked tirelessly with the youth in his community. He has eight (8) children each of whom he guided towards the pursuit of higher education. His legacy of helping our youth resides in his children to this day. Three of his daughters work at the Gahanna Children’s College (Gahanna, Ohio). Donna and Drena are Co-owners; Diane is an administrator. Donna and Drena also served in the Children Ministry at their church. Denesse volunteered to work with children who attended Hite Elementary School (Louisville, Kentucky). Her services consisted of tutoring, planning numerous school activities and serving as a parent representative on the School Based Decision Making Council. Deborah has worked as a teacher and principal in the Broward County school system (Fort Lauderhill, Florida). She currently works as an administrator. Larry has worked with our youth as a volunteer with the Boys Scouts of America, as a Youth Leader II with the Ohio Department of Youth Services (Columbus, Ohio) and he serves within the Youth Development Ministry at his church. Lynwood served as a volunteer football coach in the Los Angeles area.
The Percy Lee Brown, Jr. Scholarship Fund was founded in 1997 to provide financial assistance for higher education to needy students. The founders of the Percy Lee Brown, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund believe by providing assistance to promising young students that this will help prepare them to take their place as future leaders in society.
